Prepare for Court: Checklist

Use this checklist to gather documents and plan for your hearing.

Before the hearing

Read your complaint or response and case number
Organize key facts in chronological order
Prepare a short statement of what you want the judge to do

Bring to court

Original documents and at least 2 copies for the judge and opposing party
Receipts, contracts, photos, messages, or other evidence
Witness contact info and a short written summary of what they will say
Valid ID and any required filing fee or fee waiver paperwork

At the hearing

Arrive early and check in with court clerk
Address the judge clearly and briefly; follow courtroom rules
Keep copies of all evidence you show to the judge
Take notes of what the judge says and any next steps
